With the news that a solo ‘Obi-Wan’ film is in the works, I have decided to pitch my idea and explain why I think it will work and what I’d like to see…
‘Former Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi is in self exposed exile on the planet Tatooine after the fall of the Jedi order at the hands of the evil Empire. Living deep in the mountains with only his nightmares and the dangerous locals for company, he spends his days watching over young Luke Skywalker from a distance. His lonely existence is interrupted when a mysterious woman and her son arrive looking for the great Jedi master Obi-Wan. They were that this great Jedi could help them escape a brutal gangster and a bounty hunter the Empire has sent after them. Kenobi initially tells them he cannot help, but will the great former Jedi turn his back? Or will he once again raise his Lightsaber in defense of the innocent? Our hero must face his own demons, come to terms with his past and try to become the man he was in this tale of redemption.’
For this stand-alone Star Wars movie, it must be a more character based adventure. The central story shows Obi Wan learning that not only was the Jedi way perhaps flawed, but he must get rid of his guilt and self-doubt to make sure Luke doesn’t become like his father. Obi wan is haunted by flashbacks of Anakin’s turn to the dark side (a good chance to see a more bad ass and ruthless Anakin as opposed to the whiney prequel version) and his own failures. Kenobi is a man of religion and order who lost everything he knew because of his failure as a mentor. This scenario allows Kenobi to face his past and find redemption by once again tacking responsibility for a young man in peril. I would have force ghost cameo from Qui-Gon Jinn, where Kenobi says that the dark side ‘killed his friend’, before Qui-Gon tells him that one day he will become one with the force and more powerful than he could ever have imagined. I would also have a cameo from Uncle Owen and young Luke, where Luke asks who that man is and Owen says, ‘Just a crazy old hermit’ and a scene where the family first meet Kenobi and they are overheard by a nearby citizen; ‘Did he just call you Obi-Wan?’ ‘No’ Kenobi replies ‘he called me Old Ben’. The film would feature scenes where Kenobi looks at his Lightsaber with anguish as it reminds him of all the violence and death he has seen, this will add weight to the later action when he rescues the family as this time he is using it for the good of others. I feel this would correct some plot holes from the prequels as well as connect the two trilogies. We will see how our hero’s character changes and ultimately finds peace.
So what do you think? Is this total rubbish? Is it amazing? What do you think will happen? Feel free to comment and, if you want, add your own pitches. Thanks for reading!
